Accessibility statement

This accessibility statement applies to www.lydford.co.uk, the Lydford village website, including the section used by Lydford Parish Council to publish its agendas, minutes, accounts and other information.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader

We have also tried to make the text as simple as possible to understand. AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • some parish council documents (mainly minutes and agendas in PDF format) are not fully accessible to screen reader software
  • some older documents are in Word or Excel formats that may lack headings and structure
  • some images in older news posts may not have a text alternative
  • the embedded Nicholls Hall bookings calendar is provided by Google and is not fully under our control

Feedback and contact information

If you need information on this website in a different format, such as an accessible PDF, large print, easy read or audio, or if you find a problem not listed on this page, please contact the Clerk to Lydford Parish Council:

We will consider your request and aim to get back to you within 10 working days.

Enforcement procedure

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the “accessibility regulations”). If you are not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Lydford Parish Council is committed to making the information it publishes on this website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • Some parish council minutes and agendas published as PDFs are not tagged, so screen reader users cannot navigate their headings and structure. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships).
  • Some PDFs have an incorrect document title, which fails success criterion 2.4.2 (Page Titled), or an incorrect document language, which fails success criterion 3.1.1 (Language of Page).
  • Some older documents are in Word (.doc) and Excel (.xls) formats which may not have headings or a defined structure, failing success criterion 1.3.1.
  • Some images in older news posts may not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Content).

From October 2026, new council documents will be published as tagged PDFs with the correct title and language. We aim to replace the affected documents published since September 2018 with accessible versions by the next review of this statement in May 2027. In the meantime, an accessible version of any document can be requested using the contact details above.

Disproportionate burden

We are not currently claiming that any accessibility problems would be a disproportionate burden to fix.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

  • Older documents: the accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they are not essential to providing our services. This includes older minutes and agendas.
  • Third-party content: some content is provided by other organisations and is not under our control, including the embedded Google Calendar on the Nicholls Hall page and websites we link to.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

In October 2026 we:

  • added text alternatives to images on the parish council page
  • gave the embedded bookings calendar an accessible title
  • removed hidden carousel links from the keyboard tab order
  • enlarged the email sign-up checkboxes to meet the minimum target size
  • set the website’s language to British English so screen readers pronounce it correctly

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was first prepared on 17 May 2026, following an automated assessment by accessScan. It was last reviewed on 11 October 2026.

The website was last tested on 11 October 2026 against the WCAG 2.2 AA standard. Testing used the axe-core automated testing tool on 14 pages, selected to cover each type of page on the site: the home page, the main section pages, the parish council pages, venue and accommodation pages, a news listing and individual news posts. A sample of 10 parish council PDF documents was also checked, along with manual checks of page language, the skip link and keyboard focus.

This statement will be reviewed annually, with the next review due in May 2027.
