OVERVIEW

School History, Ethos, Development and Facilities

Lydford Primary School is a fine stone building, located close to the centre of Lydford village. It was opened in 1878 and the first headteacher was Mr Kenner. Over the years there have been gradual changes to the building and the grounds, including, in 1996, the construction of an extension to the rear of the School. That extension provided a new classroom of modern design, adaptable for all today’s curriculum subjects and with views over Dartmoor. New toilets with disabled facilities, a new office and entrance hall were also included in the School at that date. The year 2002 saw further significant improvements comprising the amalgamation of two non-classroom areas so as to form a single area suitable for PE for the younger children and for lunch tables (replacing the inconvenient use of the normal classrooms), and also the building of a roofed-over decked area at the back of the School for outdoor play-time use by the children in rainy weather. For some Drama & Dance and for PE for the older children, the nearby Nicholls Hall is used, and for Sports events the School makes good use of its large adjoining playing field.

The School is well equipped, including with six computers linked to the Internet for use by the pupils.  In the Key-Stage-2 classroom, computer networking allows the children to access and work on their saved files from any of the computers in that room.  The School also has colour printers and scanner, and a laminator and comb-binder.

The School welcomes community involvement and provides ‘Meals on Wheels’ for the Village’s service, and senior citizens are welcome to join the children once per week for school lunch. One of our weekly visitors attended the school as a child in the 1920s. The School is well supported by parents in the "Friends of Lydford School" organisation.

Lydford Primary School is a welcoming place where children can learn to grow into responsible adults. It provides a caring, understanding environment and, because it is small, the teachers and support staff can provide the attention that children need to develop their individual talents.

The basic "Three Rs" are still the foundations of the education that we provide, and the new Literacy Hour and Numeracy Hour are forming the basis of a wide and interesting range of subjects. The children in the School in 1878 could never have dreamed of such things as computer studies, environmental/ecological lessons or learning French !.
