The Village of Lydford, founded by King Alfred in about 890 AD as a fortified Anglo-Saxon town to help to defend Wessex against the Vikings, is located in West Devon within the Dartmoor National Park, and contains the historic Lydford Castle and Church and the spectacular Lydford Gorge with its Devil's Cauldron and elegant "White Lady" waterfall. It is an ideal centre for seeing North, Central & South Devon, the cathedral city of Exeter and Plymouth & its Hoe, and it has quick access to the A30 dual-carriageway trunk road into Cornwall including for visiting the famous Jamaica Inn on Bodmin Moor and the Eden Project in St. Austell.

Lydford House

Lydford House is a fine Victorian Residence set in eight acres of delightful gardens and pasture-land in the historic village of Lydford.   It is within the boundary of Dartmoor National Park and enjoys the peace and quiet of the beautiful Devon countryside, complete with its own riding stables. The house was built in the mid 1880s as the home of William Widgery, the well known Dartmoor artist (1822-1893), who occupied it for over ten years.   During that time he painted many of his popular watercolours of Dartmoor scenes.

We offer you accommodation in spacious en-suite rooms (doubles, twins, singles and a family suite)
with full English breakfasts using local produce. There are also two comfortable self-catering apartments:
the Coach House sleeping upto six people and the Widgery Nest sleeping upto four.
Drinks are served in our guest lounge around the open log fire.   Our two dogs Toby & Gipsy enjoy welcoming other canine friends.

We have our own private access onto the "Granite Way" cycle track (part of National Route 27) and offer bicycles for hire.
The open land of Dartmoor is close-by, offering excellent hacking, with stabling provided for your horses at no extra cost.

Why not hire one of our bicycles and enjoy a packed lunch and take a ride along the nearby Okehampton/Lydford 'Granite Way' which is part of The Devon Coast to Coast National Cycle Route no.27, and afterwards indulge yourself in a delicious cream tea!.   If you've left the car behind, don't worry, as we can provide free transport for evening meals if necessary.
