The Village of Lydford, founded by King Alfred in about 890 AD as a fortified Anglo-Saxon town to help to defend Wessex against the Vikings, is located in West Devon within the Dartmoor National Park, and contains the historic Lydford Castle and Church and the spectacular Lydford Gorge with its Devil's Cauldron and elegant "White Lady" waterfall. The house was built in the mid 1880s as the home of William Widgery, the well known Dartmoor artist (1822-1893), who occupied it for over ten years.   During that time he painted many of his popular watercolours of Dartmoor scenes. We offer you accommodation in spacious en-suite rooms (doubles, twins, singles and a family suite) with full English breakfasts using local produce. There are also two comfortable self-catering apartments: the Coach House sleeping upto six people and the Widgery Nest sleeping upto four.
