The Village of Lydford, founded by King Alfred in about 890 AD as a fortified Anglo-Saxon town to help to defend Wessex against the Vikings, is located in West Devon within the Dartmoor National Park, and contains the historic Lydford Castle and Church and the spectacular Lydford Gorge with its Devil's Cauldron and elegant "White Lady" waterfall. It is an ideal centre for seeing North, Central & South Devon, the cathedral city of Exeter and Plymouth & its Hoe, and it has quick access to the A30 dual-carriageway trunk road into Cornwall including for visiting the famous Jamaica Inn on Bodmin Moor and the Eden Project in St. Austell. |
